The shaly rocks of Llandoverian Age are 400 million years old, deposited when Llandovery lay in a sub-tropical sea, south of the equator. Rock type and work of four recent Ice Ages have produced the unique scenery that surrounds us here. Millions of fossil graptolites, looking like tiny saws, are a distinctive feature of the grey rock which forms the local building stone.
